Slaughter-House Five

I have read both "Welcome to the Monkey House" and "Slaughter-House Five" both written by the genius writer Kurt Vonnegut. These are two great books which I'd definitely recommend to anyone who wants a try at his unique political satire. However Slaughter-House Five is the most interesting book of the two. Slaughter-House Five is a recounting of WW2 by a WW2 veteran. However he recounts one battle with great accuracy. This is the infamous bombing of Dresden which caused Germany to surrender. The way he recounts this instance is through the creation of an interesting lackadaisical character named Billy. Billy is able to travel through time going through several memories in his life. This creates a power-ful visualization on how war affected his life from the day he went to Dresden to the time he died. What might keep some people from this book is its introduction of aliens which makes it a very odd book. You see Billy is abducted by aliens called Tralfamadorians who see all of time all at once. Their philosophy in life is a very logical yet cold one, they completely ignore all terrible times that ever existed. This persona of lackadaisical characters and mish-mash of terror, hate and cold emotionless truth will have you hating all war with just a few pages. This book is an eye-opener and a great book all around. From 1984 to Slaughter-House Five Kurt is just as good as a writer as Orwell. They both make cold heartless worlds and their ability to bring the worst into prospective is truly amazing.
